Obama and the Gradual Abridgement of Freedom

Since the general civilization of mankind, I believe there are more instances of the abridgment of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power, than by violent and sudden usurpations;

James Madison, 1788, Virginia Convention to ratify the Federal Constitution

I am flabbergasted that the mastermind that said this is the same guy that is dismantling our country, destroying our free market economy and trampling on our liberty.  However, I am stupefied that we are allowing it.  It’s been quite a week for the Obama Administration – again.  The American people are being bombarded with policy initiatives left and right (mostly left) and it’s getting difficult to keep up.  I’m hoping, that in the context of the quote above, I’ve hit on the most egregious – this week.

The release of the “Torture Memos” has released a cascade of renewed anti-Bush, anti-America, “We are the bad guys” sentiment across America and the Left is thrilled.  Surprisingly, the rest of the world is largely silent.  It would appear that even the most Liberal of nations recognizes the devastating strategic mistake of releasing to the world the tactics used by intelligence agencies to obtain information from captured enemy combatants and terrorists.  But we need not bother ourselves with this.  This is for our commanding officers and armed forces still in combat theaters to be concerned about.  Thank goodness we waterboard our own soldiers – if captured, they’ll suffer less while contemplating their eventual beheadings.  But it’s much more entertaining to have a self-centered, morally ambiguous comedian disparage the military operations of the last century rather than recognize fact.

Justice Souter announced he will retire and the Left is positively drooling over who they might be able to slip in to replace him.  This all brings on visions of mass gay marriage ceremonies and drive-thru abortion clinics in many of us on the Right.  Despite their own polls indicating otherwise, the Left still believes a significant majority of Americans support same sex marriage and abortion rights.  Obama will get to appoint someone, but exactly how radical his pick might be remains to be seen.  His statement that “empathy” is needed is a good indication he’s the “activist judge” type – not good news for us who believe the law is the law and we all deserve equal protection under it.

The auto-bailout rescue operation was nearly signed, sealed and delivered, as in delivering the future of the auto manufacturing sector of the economy into the hands of the UAW, when creditors cried foul.  And while the UAW is willing to step in and take control of the auto maker, private lenders/creditors who have resisted administration bullying will take their chances in bankruptcy court, where it looks as if they will actually fare better.  One has to wonder if all those GM lenders will find their backbones or cave to Obama and his the unions.  I suppose we should assume that the President will eventually say something to defend these creditors and attempts to have their contracts honored, at least to castigate those who are threatening the safety of these people and their families, but he didn’t do it when it happened the last time so I’m not holding my breath.  And now word that the bank “Stress Test” results will be out later this week, with warnings already predicting 10 of 19 will be required to boost capital or accept government assistance.

As if all of this is not enough to have you scrambling for cover, the President is now going to take a look at “No Child Left Behind”.  Who wouldn’t be encouraged considering his recent comments regarding what students should be studying and which careers they should be pursuing.  Based on his misunderstanding of the role Wall Street plays in the economy and his and his wife’s creepy statements about preferred career goals, I can’t wait to see how he feels about how our public schools are doing.  It can’t be that bad, considering he wasn’t willing to back the DC voucher program, a program that allowed under privileged students to attend the very school his daughters attend.

So what does all of the above have to do with the end of freedom in this country?  Re-read the quote from James Madison.  Every decision, every choice, every requirement – every time the government tells you that you must or must not do something, you have lost some of your freedom.  It may not seem like much measured policy by policy.  But when you add them all up, we’re giving away the very freedoms on which this country was founded.  And this includes keeping the money you earn, to do with as you wish.  Obama swore to defend and uphold the Constitution  and he is not doing it.  What are you doing to stop him?

    As a completely nonpolitical sidenote about the website’s design, have you ever thought about making the embedded links in articles stand out a little more, maybe by using a slightly lighter shade of blue? I can never quite tell where the links are.

  2. Great (and applicable to our current government) quote at the top.

    Always has been one of my favorite founding fathers’ quotes.

    Abridgement of Freedom will continue under the President’s new SCOTUS nominee. He has hidden her radical activist tendencies behind her compelling personal story. The media loves a good story and won’t let this one go. Unfortunately, this potential justice’s willingness to use personal background as a reason to overrule legal precedence and overlook legislative intent will further erode freedoms. Without an elected legislature to make and modify law, the courts will become defacto (unelected) legislatures. Sotomayor seems to believe this is justified.

    The DC press corps as well as the political ruling class are just agog over this nomination though and they’ve said some strange things.
