Senator Arlen Specter Defects!

Know your friends.  Know your enemies better.  Considering the Swine Flu is spreading like wildfire, this may very well be the best news we’ll hear today.  As a proud, card-carrying Republican, I say let all the moderates defect.  We are in a battle for the future of our country and there is no room for compromise and no room for those stuck on the fence.  I’d prefer to be a member of a party with principles and a clear cut mission rather than a cog in a self-serving conglomerate of “gimmes”.

Michael Steele on CNN this PM – “Good riddance.” And he’s exactly right. This is not a catastrophe for the GOP but it could be a catastrophe for the country.

The CNN desk girl cannot hide her glee on this. She’s very concerned about the demise of the two party system, no checks and balances, can the Republicans survive. I guess I will just never understand how, with the flu pandemic imminent, New Yorkers suffering PTSD, the world economy still in shambles, yet the media can still find the time to worry about the future of the Republican party. I’ll tell you what, you Liberal guys are in charge now. You worry about the big, end-of-the-world stuff, we’ll worry about the GOP.

As I said, this is good news. You know, if they get their sixty votes by stealing Minnesota, all the better. More rope to hang themselves, more motivation to throw ‘em all out in 2010. On the bright side, the Dems will have to spend a lot of money to “keep” this seat. Specter switched because he knew he wasn’t getting any support from the GOP, he knew he would be unemployed soon.

All Americans, especially those currently in office, need to decide where they stand – big government/big brother or self-determination. The sooner the lines are drawn, the better.

  4. Carol Gilbert says:

Specter had the courage to do what he had to do in order to be able to try to use his experience to continue in the Senate where he can vote about what he thinks is best for the country. It is clear he will follow an agenda that he will do what is good for the country and forsake LOYALTY to a party for this right.

    • GOPMOM says:

So Carol, was he being “courageous” when he neglected to inform the RNC he was defecting? Was he “courageous” when he mocked Republicans in his presser this afternoon? Was it courage that convinced him he needed to switch parties, after reviewing his polling numbers, in order to keep his job? This looks a lot like self preservation to me, handled very badly. But I’m sure all the “those bad Republicans” sound bytes will help his reelection fund. What one person calls courage others call cowardice, I guess.

If Sen. Specter had recognized years ago that he was a Democrat – something he apparently has been for years, he should have switched then. If he’s so thick that it took the observation and encouragement of the VP, Joe “Doofus” Biden, to point out the obvious to him, maybe he should not be representing anyone.

But you’re barking up the wrong tree if you think this Republican is sorry to see him go, as I made very clear above. And what good is he doing the country? So far, everything this Congress/the Obama admin touches turns to $#@&.

      • ATG says:

This is a first… I largely agree with you, Mom. I don’t think there’s anything courageous about it, the guy wants to win an election. And I don’t think it’s a tremendous loss for the GOP, given Specter’s voting record (he only voted with the GOP around 60% of the time), although it will likely make it easier for Dems to push through the big-ticket items like healthcare etc.

I do think that it’s a further symptom, though, of the fact that the GOP as we know it has built itself a small tent and will wallow in irrelevance until it figures out how to make that tent bigger.

  5. GOPMOM says:

If I had to pick between being irrelevant or being wrong, I would happily choose irrelevant. Thankfully, the destructive, punitive and irresponsible policy initiatives of your guys are so outrageous that I won’t have to.

    • ATG says:

I guess so, but if it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck, it’s probably a duck, and by duck I mean in this case of course “irrelevant group of fringe voters who shouldn’t be taken seriously by the country’s political center.”

      • gopmom says:

I know this will crush your spirits on this glorious “100th Day” but I’m not concerned – especially with the passage of the mammoth budget. `

        • ATG says:

          Let’s see…
-Your party lost a presidential election in a landslide
-The President just managed to get his budget passed mostly intact with very little hand-wringing
-68% of the American people approve of the job the President is doing, and the percent of Americans who feel the country is on the right track has increased 30% since the President’s election
-Your party just lost the one final check on the President’s agenda that you had
-There is no coherent and plausible strategy (nor much of a desire, it seems) for your party to regain the center in American politics for years to come

And, yet, what I’m hearing is that you have us right where you want us?

  6. One of my favorite morning radio hosts (who is from Pittsburgh) calls him “Arlen Sphincter”. I think this name is in many ways appropriate.

    He will not be missed.

That said… I can’t believe this Minnesota stuff is still going on SIX MONTHS after the election.

  7. GOPMOM says:

It is ridiculous. But also a good lesson for all of us. We should be absolutely clear about how far they are willing to go to steal an election – they are even willing to defraud legitimate voters, abuse the court system and throw as much money as necessary at it. Who do you think is paying for this? The Soros slush fund has been behind Franken from the beginning and Coleman is getting some money from the party but he’s also still raising funds to pay for this legal battle. How ridiculous is it that this is a legal battle? It truly goes to the character, or lack thereof, of the Left. And it is fitting that a not-very-funny comedian is the clown who is responsible for this.

The Democrats have set-up what they believe is an unbeatable machine, between their court appointees, ACORN observers, phony voters and criminal Board of Elections. No one should be confused as to the illegal acts that are occurring, from double counting ballots to blocking absentee ballots. It’s is surprising, mostly because most of us would ever consider cheating as an appropriate way to get into office. As I’ve said over and over again, you have to wonder about the motives of someone who would lie, cheat and steal to get anything, but especially to get their hands on political power. But what they always fail to comprehend is how powerful the American public is when angry, when they know they’ve been had.

Norm Coleman should be hailed a true Patriot for continuing to battle this injustice. Send him a check! And then get busy locally finding the candidates you want to run and wrk hard to get them into office. Nothing but a complete turnover of our legislatures is going to stop this. They are not the majority. We outnumber them almost 2 to 1. This is a no-brainer.

    “More rope to hang themselves”?
Yeah, that sounds about right coming from any GOP member.

Personally I think it would be quite interesting to see the Republicans back in power. They only: stop scientific progress, give economic breaks to big oil and big pharma, have party members that hold major stock in weapons companies (yey, war is great) and failed to help Katrina victims. I’m not saying the Democratic party is amazing, but I am saying that the GOP needs a HUGE clean up.

Oh, one more thing, I love that “debt counter” on the website here, it’s too bad that it was Bush and friends that actually got the debt way up there. Do you know how much a war costs?

Anyone here want a house with $0 put down on it?

  9. wrench says:

“Oh, one more thing, I love that “debt counter” on the website here, it’s too bad that it was Bush and friends that actually got the debt way up there.”

    Lets’ compare…

    Bush vs. Obama deficient

    • President Bush expanded the federal budget by a historic $700 billion through 2008. BO would add another $1 trillion.
    • President Bush began a string of expensive financial bailouts. BO is accelerating that course.
    • President Bush created a Medicare drug entitlement that will cost an estimated $800 billion in its first decade. BO has proposed a $634 billion down payment on a new government health care fund.
    • President Bush increased federal education spending 58 percent faster than inflation. BO would double it.
    • President Bush became the first President to spend 3 percent of GDP on federal antipoverty programs. BO has already increased this spending by 20 percent.
    • President Bush tilted the income tax burden more toward upper-income taxpayers. BO would continue that trend.
    • President Bush presided over a $2.5 trillion increase in the public debt through 2008. Setting aside 2009 (for which President Bush and BO share responsibility for an additional $2.6 trillion in public debt), BO budget would add $4.9 trillion in public debt from the beginning of 2010 through 2016.
  10. Observer:

…and failed to help Katrina victims.

Erm… how did they do that? Because they didn’t come until the democrat mayor and governor called? Or did they tell Ray Nagin not to use the busses or to evac–no that last was his decision as someone about to be reelected–he was afraid that a mass evac would result in disaster for his campaign.

FACT: It is not the Federal government’s job to come to aid on something like that UNTIL the local and state authorities explicitly ask for it. That’s how a REPUBLIC works: Keep the power (and responsibility) as local as possible.

Observer, you and ATG have very interestingly skewed views.

It’s always very entertaining reading. I just wish I could keep some popcorn handy for the show.
