GOPMOM ALERT: AIG Bonus kerfuffle continues
I’ve been watching with absolute disbelief the media coverage over the AIG bonus controversy for the last day or two and it has officially reached “unhinged” status. And, surprisingly to me, on the Republican side as well as the Democrat side.
“I suggest, you know, obviously, maybe they ought to be removed,” Grassley said. “But I would suggest the first thing that would make me feel a little bit better toward them if they’d follow the Japanese example and come before the American people and take that deep bow and say, I’m sorry, and then either do one of two things: resign or go commit suicide.
“And in the case of the Japanese, they usually commit suicide before they make any apology.”
I think Senator Grassely should remove himself from office, (one way or another***) – immediately. This statement is unbelievably offensive. It is obvious that this moron has never lost anyone to suicide. Yes, I know he has said outrageous things in the past but this is beyond all acceptable limits of (political) blathering. He needs to go. And I hope he has a really good lawyer, just in case someone takes him at his word. It’s as if he doesn’t have any regard at all for the many Americans who have lost their savings and livelihoods already. Yes, losing money is bad, losing your life is worse – always. Get some perspective.
The dramatic outrage of politicians in Washington and across the country is nothing more than nauseating play acting. Obama was out in full force yesterday, spouting every foul word that scrolled across his tele-prompter. I personally loved how he got all “choked up with anger” and promised to pursue every legal avenue to block to bonuses – of which there is none. Apparently, we will not reward poor performance with cash bonuses. Um, Mr. President, could you adopt the same for your colleagues on Capitol Hill?
Speaking of Capitol Hill, all the hypocrites were out in full force yesterday – you know, the guys and gals who pushed the bail-out through last fall, the one most of America did not want – with ideas of how to rob the recipients of the bonuses.
It’s an idea very much at the embryonic stage,” said Senate Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd, D-Conn., “You can write a tax provision targeted specifically at 98 percent of the taxable proceeds.”
Nancy Pelosi is suggesting that the bonus recipients simply give the money back. Barney Frank has his usual, unique take on things-
“These people may have a right to their bonuses, they don’t have a right to their jobs forever,”
From his lips to God’s ears, no?
And, of course, the unhingedness of it all spread far and wide, right to the office of the NY Attorney General, who gave AIG three hours to produce the goods.
New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo told American International Group he wanted a list on his desk by the end of the day of employees set to receive millions of dollars in bonuses.
Notice how he wants AIG “to produce the names of the people who got the bonuses, not the names of the people who paid them, not the executives who wrote the contracts awarding these merit bonus.” He doesn’t want the name of the CEO – Obama already pardoned him. Notice how he didn’t ask for the names of those responsible for the outrageous bail-out given to AIG in the first place with no limits on how to spend billions and billions of tax payer dollars. He probably doesn’t need that list, though – it’s his campaign donor list.
Is this where we are today? Whether you knew it or not last fall, hopefully you now realize that TARP was an irresponsible, disastrous endeavor designed to endear corporate donors and everyday voters to campaigning politicians. What is ironic is that these bozos now are claiming they were the ones fooled, the ones taken advantage of, the ones wronged. And many of our fellow citizens are falling for it.
What happened to the old “just blame Bush” line? Is it possible this excuse is getting old? Are we so far gone that we find it unacceptable that anyone be rewarded for a job well done? Is it beyond belief that any division of AIG performed well and therefor the bonuses are justified? Someone must have done a good job or the company would have gone under, bail-out be damned. Are we so stupid at this point that we cannot understand this?
We need to place “blame” where it belongs – on the people who campaigned for and signed off on TARP without taking the time to institute regulations on where public funds could be used. We need to recognize this for what it is – another attempt by the Obama administration to further infiltrate the public sector – I imagine the raids of the AIG offices are already in the works – turn public opinion against the fundamental principles of capitalism – profit bad, reward for performance unacceptable – government will take care of everything – go back to watching Idol. Wake up!

[...] drama, drama, BTW, they are using to whip mobs of Americans into a frenzy, going so far as to suggest suicide, for Pete’s sake – and all this to avoid taking any responsibility for handing money to a [...]
I don’t like that Cuomo and others are pushing so hard to release the names of the folks who received bonuses – seems like pretty bad judgment with unlikely but potentially disastrous consequences given the threats AIG folks have been getting recently.
Oh my, such strong words – especially considering that half the country wants to lynch Congress and the other half wants to lynch the AIG “execs”. Wow, better slow down there, ATG, you might raise oyur heart rate a fraction.
Never fear, Obama and his socialist thugs will get to you any day now – unless, of course, you’re one of them. In that case, the wait may be longer.
