GOPMOM Note: Will the Hopenchangers vote today?
The Bail-Out-a Palooza is still languishing in the Senate. As public opinion continues to swing further to the right on this criminal thievery, Senate Dem leaders are still pushing, pushing, pushing. I wasn’t planning on spending the weekend watching C-SPAN, but what they heck? Harry “…we should outlaw polls…” Reid is still determined to get a vote before the big trip to Munich. What I’m wondering is: If this Act is going to save America from “catastrophe”, why are they trying to get the vote in before going on vacation – when they could just cancel the trip? Doesn’t the dire nature of the issue require thoughtful consideration? If this is the most important thing Obama can do to turn around the economy and save all of us from a Depression, why not do their jobs, debate it properly and actually produce legislation that helps and protects tax payers – namely, tax cuts?
More at NRO on the pork in the bill.
Senate Democrats acknowledged Wednesday that they do not have the votes to pass the stimulus bill in its current form. This is unexpected good news. The House passed the stimulus package with zero Republican votes (and even a few Democratic defections), but few expected Senate Republicans (of whom there are only 41) to present a unified front. A few moderate Democrats have reportedly joined them.
Make sure you make that call to the Senate today. Call for me – Kerry and Kennedy aren’t worth the free long-distance. Keep in mind, public opinion is @ 39% support, 50% think the bill will make it worse. And 57% believe tax cuts are the way out of this mess.
Why don’t they just start over? I’d rather see one issue at a time tackled, one bill at a time. Tax cuts – done. Infrastructure projects – uhh, maybe. Everything else – gone, baby, gone. The Dems have plenty of time to spend us into bankruptcy – almost two years. Why the big push here, when it has become a PR nightmare? Does Obama think he will be untouched by this failure? I thought this was his cornerstone? And remember the words of Emmanuel – never let a good crisis go to waste. Apparently the public is slightly smarter than their recent vote would have indicated. Hmm, maybe there’s hope for change after all.
