If Only
If you wondered (probably not)why I stopped blogging, it’s so as to enjoy the remainder of the summer. Well that and the fact that nothing new is happening in the ‘08 race, at least nothing of note. John McCain is still the old guy that no one wants to hug and Obama is still the media darling who can do no wrong. I’m so sick of it, in fact, I’d gladly hand the nomination to Obama, let the VP’s put their own names on the ballot and just get it over with. If you haven’t decided yet who you want to vote for, you’re a moron and should be shot. Or spayed/neutered.
This is not that hard of a decision to make. If you believe that we should not raise taxes thereby hindering job creation, not cripple industry with outrageous “environmental protections” and not pay reparations to black people for something none of them has ever experienced, then vote for John McCain. If you disagree with those positions, vote for the Communist Liberal who thinks that if you are fortunate and smart enough to make a good living, you should share it with the “less fortunate“, via the Federal Government. See, easy decision. Let’s vote now.
But then, out of the clear blue (or grey if you’re in New England) sky comes the “John Edwards Affair“. Praise be, something to talk about while waiting in line at the ice cream truck. Finally, a true villain that everyone can hate equally, except NBC, ABC, CBS and CNN, that is. And I thought all the interesting news in this campaign was over - at least until Hillary steals the nomination away from Barack-is-he-really-an-eligible-American-Obama. Is there anything better than a know-it-all, mega-rich, “do as I say not as I do” Liberal getting caught with his pants down? And by the National Enquirer, no less.
So what does John Edwards do? He denies it, in classic Clinton fashion. (Where was the wagging finger?) He gets all angry and self-righteous, and scolds the press that once so dearly loved him. Until he was a loser, that is. Now he’s dragging his unfortunate wife through all this. And we’re treated to emails, texts and photos of Riley or Rielli or Reille whatever her name is Hunter. (Is that her legal name or just her Second Life avatar?) I can’t wait until she guests on The View.
What I’m really enjoying, though, is the dancing around the facts. In his interview with Bob Woodruff, Edwards never answered in the affirmative when asked if he had an affair. He just used the ‘ol “Well, the truth is…” line. Come on, Edwards wouldn’t know the truth if it walked up (completely naked except for a zebra print headband) and smacked him. So why can’t all of his esteemed colleagues just say so. Why can’t just one of his Democrat (or Republican) buddies just come out and say he’s a sleaze ball and his career should be and is over? After all, he doesn’t need the money. Are they really just trying to protect his wife? Could it be they are just protecting themselves and their own deep dark secrets? Obama is supposed to be the golden child, why doesn’t he say something? If he did, he just might make a believer out of me. Instead, they all glance nervously at the camera while offering their best wishes to the family. What family? Edwards has destroyed it.
Well, the sun is starting to peek through for it’s one hour performance, so I should go walk the dogs. Enjoy what’s left of the summer. And if the dreary weather blues start to get to you, just meditate on the following:
If only John Edwards was the Democrat nominee.

I always felt a little greasey after hearing Edwards talk, now I know why. He IS a scumbag.
But I’d be fair and also allow that there are plenty of neo-cons who have been in similar situations to be fair.
Glad to see you’re back. These gray skies are terribly boring, and make me think way too often about all that is wrong in this world, instead of focusing on fun in the sun.

Oh, come on AMP, you can enjoy this. Think of it as a refreshing “Cape Codder” after a long hot day.
The difference, as I see it, between how the Dem’s handle this type of scandal versus the Republicans - we shun the scum. I hear they don’t even have mail delivery to Larry Craig’s office anymore. If Edwards doesn’t have the decency to go climb under a rock so we don’t have to watch this tragedy play out ie his someday performance at the death and funeral of his wife, the least the Dem’ can do is dump him. But I have a sneaking suspicion they’ll just pack him away for awhile and bring him back down the road.
As for comparisons, I can’t think of one Republican presidential candidate whose wife had terminal cancer, who slept around with “staff”, probably impregnated the *@#^! and then allowed the campaign to pay her off. That’s a special kind of scum not regularly found in polite society. ANd please don[t compare McCain’s affair to this. Edwards is a grown man - and running for President. I’d say we all dodged a bullet and should be grateful. Maybe Ted K could take him for a ride out to the Vineyard, no?

Why not compare McCain’s affair to this? If things Obama did years before he was running for president are fair game and evidence of his “character” - why does McCain get a pass?
Comment by gopmom on 19 October 2008:
John McCain came clean about his affair. Edwards did not. Obama has not come clean on anything. He denies, he lies, he gets caught, he promptly “throws under the bus” the inconvenient person with whom he had a relationship. Plus, we have thirty years of history is McCain and an apology. McCain was a cad. Obama is God knows what.
Comment by Ian on 19 October 2008:
I’m talking about McCain here. He cheated, got caught and came clean - had he not been caught, who knows if he’d have been so candid about it. The point is, he showed immoral and bad judgment the moment he decided to cheat. As a Christian myself, I believe he has repented and God has forgiven him. I believe God has forgiven Obama for his past sins also - at least those that he has repented for, not to you or I, but to God.
Comment by Ian on 19 October 2008:
Also, as a Christian, I don’t take pleasure in the pain and misfortune of others - regardless of their political ideology.
Comment by gopmom on 19 October 2008:
Wow, Ian. With all the exchanges we’ve had, I never had you pegged for a Christian. Hindu? Possibly. Buddhist? More hip. Scientologist? My best bet. But Christian, never. How do you reconcile all your philosophical grey areas with all the fire and brimstone stuff?
Comment by Ian on 19 October 2008:
Well GOPMom, you’ll notice I quoted Kierkegaard - a Christian philosopher. There’s not much to reconcile there.
